Mamizou, and therefore eventually Sara, has the ability of shape-shifting! This takes a variety of forms, but only two are relevant to this post:

Changing her own form. This can be used to make herself look like someone else. The transformation is almost perfect, but it has one weakness: Her ears and (when she gets it) tail can be reduced, but never perfectly erased.

Changing the form of others. The classic wizard trick of turning someone into a frog. Depending on the power of the target, this only lasts for a couple minutes to a few seconds, and it can be resisted.

So, reply here and answer these two questions:

1. Can Sara transform herself into a doppelganger of your character?

2. I'll always ask before doing this one, but Can Sara transform your character into someone or something else?

Comments screened. Let this also act as a plotting post if you have any ideas for shape-shifting shenanigans.

Soren, Soren, Soren, what are we going to do with you? I'm not exactly opposed to trolling on principle, but there's a difference between being an internet puppetmaster and saying vaguely confrontational and obviously wrong things to everyone you talk to! What shows promise in concept falls short in execution. I think we can all aim a little higher, don't you? ★½

Whever there is art, there are differing interpretations - it's what separates it from the more concrete parts of the shared hallucination we call reality. Some people, however, don't seem to have any interest in artistic expression, or even fun, but I do not hold this against them. Would you criticize a blind man for not being able to appreciate a Picasso? Of course not. It's a tragedy of circumstance, not a failing of personal character. ★★

Marisa Kirisame
To think that we were so distant all these years! Going through my formative years as an only child, I looked upon larger families with envy. I was, of course, not under the impression that such situations lacked their own sort of strife - one would have to be a fool to think so. However, is strife not what makes us human? Would a world with no rivalries, no difficulties, not be a kind of hell? I wouldn't trade you for a more aggreeable family member for the world, baby cousin. ★★★½

Roxy Kurosawa
At last, we find a kindred spirit in this desert of the literal! The enigmatic Pumpkin Girl has demonstrated both an advanced understanding of advanced symbolism and an enthusiasm for the world of high art in general. I look forward to seeing where this one goes. ★★★

I've never been too much of one for genre fiction, but science fiction has its own strong points as a window into the society of the writer through the fictional world they choose to present. Space aliens, though? With extra eyes and crashed ships? Well, I guess one can't be blamed for being born a bit of a cliché. On a more personal note, I'm wondering if the speech impediment is natural or an aspect of his gradual Kafka-esque transformation, but I can't think of a way to ask politely. ★★½

Ah, spring, when a young girl's fancy turns to love! It's not spring, but whoever wrote that was seriously underestimating the patience of the human heart if they thought it was willing to just chill out for nine months out of the year. All signs indicate that my cousin has done well enough for herself here, although my information is admittedly limited. I'll have to hunt him down and interrogate him further at some point, but I'm willing to give him a bit of leeway after he rescued me from being eaten by giant snakes. Just a bit, though. ★★★

I really need to make more friends my own age.

You have reached Sara's voice mail! It seems like I am not there to take your call, but time has no meaning beyond what modern society imparts upon it, so this is probably an elaborate shared hallucination.

You are free to leave a message at the beep regardless!

Name: Mamizou Futatsuiwa (Canon) or Sara Kirisame (AU)
Canon and medium: Touhou Project (Game series)
Age: Canon age unknown but probably a couple hundred years. Reincarnated age 21.
Preincarnation Species: Tanuki.
Preincarnation Appearance: Like so.
Any differences: No animal ears, no animal tail, no ridiculous leafhat.
Preincarnated History:
Sado is a small island off the coast of Japan. While you wouldn't know it from looking now, it was once a nation of tanuki, where they could live freely and cheerfully, without a fox in sight. These days the island is mostly urbanized and run by humans, but a lot of the people who live there are actually the descendants of tanuki who took human forms and stuck with them so long that they forgot they were tanuki. It was in this land that Mamizou was born, a powerful tanuki who quickly climbed the ranks to become a respected tanuki boss, boasting (accurately or otherwise) of being the number three tanuki in power across all of Sado.

Around the year 2011, Mamizou got a message from an old friend, hailing from the sealed-off world of Gensokyo. Apparently a powerful saint by the name of Miko (the same Taoist mentioned in Marisa's app) had been resurrected, shifting Gensokyo's unstable balance of power back in the direction of the humans. The youkai needed a trump card to even the playing field, and Mamizou was to be that trump card. Happy to oblige an appeal to her ego, Mamizou crossed the sea to move to Gensokyo.

Unfortunately for whatever Nue was planning, Mamizou wasn't exactly the trump card the youkai were hoping for. She was defeated almost immediately (although after a spirited and nearly even battle!), and then went on to actually be on very good terms with the humans, often appearing in their village in human form to shop and chitchat. Gensokyo remained comparitively peaceful.

There was one other incident that Mamizou was involved in, a few months later. Hata no Kokoro, a youkai comprised of 66 masks representing various emotions, lost her mask of hope, and as a result the other 65 began to run wild, draining the hope from the human village. Mamizou wasn't especially interested in getting involved, but people kept attacking her in their own searches for the true culprit. She obliged each of them, directing them to Kokoro afterwards. Ultimately, she confronted Kokoro herself, guiding her on the path towards creating her own unique personality, after which she would no longer need masks to fuel her emotions.

Reincarnated History:
Los Angeles is not a small island off the coast of Japan, nor is it occupied by tanuki. There lived a highly disreputable man by the name of Bartholomew Kirisame, although most people called him Bart. He was a loan shark, right up until the point, in 1990, when he very suddenly found religion, moved to Locke City, settled down and married a performance artist. He remains adamant that this lifestyle change has absolutely nothing to do with the mafia telling him to disappear lest he be disappeared by force. No, sir.

Despite the sudden and possibly involuntary nature of this shift, Bart actually took to honest life rather well. One year after their marriage, Lauryna gave birth to their daughter, Sara Kirisame. Inheriting both her father's penchant for trouble and her mother's penchant for artistic esoterica, Sara traversed high school without exploding or losing her mind, and was accepted into LCU, where she is currently a Junior in the studio art program.

First Echo: Getting in a stupid argument with Marisa, echoing to her spell card duel with Marisa, because spell card duels have about as much in common with stupid arguments as they do with actual battles.

Preincarnation Personality:
In Gensokyo, there are two sides: Humans and Youkai. Not everyone especially stands on one side or the other, and the youkai aren't exactly a unified force, but a lot of people still think about it in those terms. Despite being called into Gensokyo specifically to be a powerful ally for the youkai forces, though, Mamizou stands somewhere in the middle. She's a strong supporter of her youkai brethren, but she's also on very good terms with the human village. Really, she's just an easy person to get along with. Sometimes.

Other times, it's all to clear that Mamizou is a youkai of the old school, which means trouble for humanity. She's not so classic that she preys on and kills humans - that class of youkai is rare, especially in the modern day. No, she hails more from the Coyote school of thought. One of Mamizou's favorite things in the world is watching humans squirm. She's a trickster and a troublemaker, although her pranks are usually comparatively harmless. She doesn't want people to suffer, she just wants them to be baffled and thrown off their game in amusing ways.

Mamizou is a very proud person. She takes pride in her skills, her power, and her deeds. She cheerfully boasts of her status as the third most powerful tanuki. She refuses to hide her tail even when transformed if she can help it, seeing its great size as an indicator of her great power. Her ego streak doesn't extend as far as putting others down, generally speaking - she just likes herself and likes being herself, and feels like the social rules surrounding humility don't really apply to her. She does what she finds fun, and if other people can have fun at the same time, all the better.

Ultimately, Mamizou is a decent person, but a bit eccentric. She talks like an old lady for no particular reason, despite not considering herself to be especially old (by youkai standards, at least). She means well, but doesn't shy away from a friendly duel if the situation calls for it. She wants to laugh with you, but if that's not an option she'll just as readily laugh at you. Easygoing and unburdened by thoughts of duty or obligation, she is a very youkai-like youkai.

Any differences:
Well, the main difference between Mamizou and Sara is that one is a tanuki and the other is a college student. Sara lacks a couple of Mamizou's eccentricities, like her old-fashioned speech or insistence on showing off her awesome tail (once Sara has the tail, at least). This is not to say that Sara is less eccentric, though. She just pushes all of her eccentricity in one direction: Art hipster.

Sara is the daughter of an artist, and it shows. She's fond of strange works of performance art, many of them crude or provocative, which she dresses up with elaborate and mostly-bullshitted artistic analysis to make the juvenile sound deep. She treats being Indie as a competition, relentlessly seeking out the most obscure of everything to consume - art, music, theatre, coffee shops, you name it. The less people have heard of it, the better.

Sara also differs by way of having actual family ties. Sara is a bit distant from her father, but idolizes and wants to one day become her eccentric mother. She visits them regularly, and also occasionally keeps tabs on her baby cousin Marisa, who she mostly just annoys. But in a friendly way.

Abilities: Transformation. Mamizou can change her shape to look and sound like somebody else at will, a power very useful for causing trouble. However, she is incapable of 100% hiding her ears and tail, so she has to change their size and color and hope nobody notices them. If she's surprised while disguised, her ears may twitch, giving her away.

She can also transform other objects, but this is just an illusion - the nature of the thing remains the same. A dog turned into a bird still won't be able to fly. This effect is temporary, and given enough time it will turn back to its original form.

She can fly and shoot lasers, too, like everyone in Gensokyo.

Roleplay Sample - Third Person:
Sara Kirisame, in line to order at a recently-opened cafe in the vicinity of LCU (gotta keep on top of these things!), was not paying her surroundings a great deal of attention. She was, as she was increasingly often, distracted trying to puzzle out the details of her past life. Elaborate magic duels with her cousin? Was Marisa even her cousin back then? So many questions, so few answers.

Her introspection, however, was rather suddenly interrupted as her eyes scanned the myriad posters for local theatre productions for something she hadn't already seen, landing on one advertised by a picture of a young woman holding a pair of classical theatre masks, one in each hand. With the image came a sudden flood of memories. A girl not only surrounded by masks, but somehow made of masks, the two inexorably intertwined. All of this somehow connected to Sara - no, to Mamizou, and to another name - Hata no Kokoro.

"Ah!"

Caught off guard by the sudden and public echo, a sudden twitch of movement sent Sara's beret tumbling to the floor, very clearly revealing the huge, raccoon-like ears underneath it. A heartbeat later, her hands flew to her head, doing an exceedingly mediocre job of hiding them. That wasn't too obvious, was it? The large number of heads turned her way clearly indicated otherwise.

"You didn't see anything, okay?" Sara ventured to nobody in particular. "They're fake, anyway. Go back to your lunches!"

She began scanning the cafe for any familiar faces from the Network, ultimately spotting someone she had talked to once, in passing. Good enough, now was the time for damage control.

"Hey! Fancy running into you here! Why don't we ditch this joint and find somewhere less crowded to reminisce about all our old times together?" Without waiting for an answer, she grabbed her involuntary savior by the arm, quickly and firmly escorting him out of the premises. Now to find somewhere, anywhere outside of public scrutiny until she could remember how to surpress the ears...

Roleplay Sample - Network:
Here and here.

On Spell Cards:
Just wanted to add a quick bit of justification of Sara's Echo trigger!

Gensokyo is a volatile place, filled with extremely powerful people. There are at least half a dozen youkai living there who could reduce the entire little pocket world to rubble if they went all out. This is a bad way to run a community, which is why the Spell Card Rules were invented!

The Spell Card Rules, as devised by shrine maiden Reimu Hakurei, are sort of a Gentleman's (well, Lady's) Agreement about how to have battles between superpowerful magical entities in ways that don't endanger Gensokyo's future. Spell card duels have pre-established lengths, are fought fair, are NOT fought at full power, and most importantly aren't fought to the death. As a result, the most dangerous of people in the most important of positions to battle to their hearts' content without upsetting the balance of power in any meaningful way.

As a result, Spell Card battles are basically used for everything. Someone's going on a rampage and messing things up for everyone else? Spell card battle. Bored and drunk? Spell card battle. Trying to decide which one of you is cooking tonight? Spell card battle. Got time travel powers and can't decide which of two dishes to prepare for dinner? Go back in time and have a spell card battle with yourself to decide. Yes, all of those are canon.

Anyway, that's why I say Spell Card Battles have as much to do with stupid arguments as actual battles, as half the time that's what they are.

Any Questions? No, but I wanted to clarify that I've planned the familial connection and first Echo with Marisa's player, so I'm not just pulling that out of nowhere.
